Roland Barthes said that a language is simultaneously the product and the instrument of the speech. While the statement is true within the perimeter of the ontology of languages, it also points to a methodology in interpreting languages in motion - translation. The science of translation treats languages as “instruments,” in quest of an end product as accurate as possible in representing the mother tongue. Ironically, all translations are uncertain and inaccurate, rendering a perfect correspondence impossible, which establishes the art of translation: the process itself as a product that is confusing and open-ended.

In collaboration with Accent Sisters, “Open Kitchen 003 - Other Tongue” showcases examples from a unique exercise of recursive translation as well as its self-analysis and pictorial illustrations by Jenny Jisun Kim (artist, translator) and Liyoun Kim (poet, writer, and graphic designer). As a research duo, the two place the traditional translation system in question, exposing the flaws, omissions, and alternatives which are often overlooked, and detail how human emotions and subjective judgements play a key role in different translation processes. If translation is a possessional transfer of two agencies, Jenny Jisun Kim and Liyoun Kim, utilizing their expertise in the art of language and painting/drawing, each impersonates one language to perform and enact their push and pull. As the duo explains in their statement: Translation inevitably produces both loss and excess. This linguistic multiplicity becomes the foundation for an intermedial translation that probes the abstraction, fragility, and expansiveness inherent in both language and image as sign systems.

In this collaboration, the recursive translation cycle becomes a method of abstraction itself. As segments of Liyoun Kim’s poems move back and forth between Korean and English, meaning drifts—reconfiguring across shifts in structure, time, mood, agency, spatial logic, and sensory tone. Rather than correcting these deviations, the duo treats them as material. Each drift generates a constellation of “force words” and “image cues” that form the basis for a drawing. In this way, translation and drawing operate as parallel abstractions, where loss, excess, and subjective interpretation are not obstacles but generative forces that reveal how language transforms as it moves between tongues, minds, and mediums.

Translation Exchange juxtaposes a record of repeated Korean–English translation with a drawing by Jenny Jisun Kim within a single frame. Liyoun Kim and Jenny Jisun Kim translate a passage from a poetry manuscript back and forth, recording its changes at each stage. Jenny translates the rhythms, gaps, and shifts in meaning that emerge through this exchange into line, color, and tone. The paired sheets trace the linguistic transformations and visual interpretations that proceed from the same sentence.

Each round of translation alters vocabulary and syntax, as well as tense, the position of the speaking subject, and the direction of a gaze. What changes is both what a sentence says and who speaks, when, and from where. Page and line references at the top identify its location in the manuscript; annotations and records below trace its departures from that initial context. Comparing versions, viewers follow how linguistic decisions change the conditions through which meaning takes shape.

The juxtaposition makes the interval between text and drawing integral to the work’s structure. The drawing reorganizes the meanings that language distinguishes and arranges through relations among marks, areas of color, and density. Each passage between media introduces an interpretation that changes the point of departure for the next translation. These irreversible transitions continually alter the relations between source and translation, sentence and image. The work preserves a moment in that movement through versions, annotations, and drawings that remain available for further translation and assembly.

시화 01 — 녹는 눈 감는
Sihwa 01 — Melting Snow Eyes Closing

Pigment print on translucent voile, ink, and marker

Five panels, 79 × 109 cm each, variable installation
2025

Sihwa 01 — Melting Snow Eyes Closing extends drawings and poetry from the translation exchange across five translucent panels. The artists digitize and recompose Jenny Jisun Kim’s drawings, then print them on voile. Liyoun Kim combines fragments from the same exchange with newly written lines to compose the poem Melting Snow Eyes Closing. The staggered placement and spacing of the panels bring several surfaces into a single field of vision.

As viewers move through the space, they encounter different overlaps of text and image. The translucent fabric allows traces from one surface to appear through the lettering and drawings on another; changes in position alter their contours and legibility. Reading entails both following a sentence and composing relations between surfaces. The installation translates the sequence of images that unfolds within a reader into spatial conditions: a viewer’s path, the direction of a gaze, and the distances between planes.

Within the poem, nun (눈) brings “eye” and “snow” into conjunction, shifting meaning between closing and melting, shutting and disappearance. Seon (선) likewise moves among line (線), Seon or Zen (禪), and goodness (善). Linguistic multiplicity and the fabric’s translucency unsettle the boundaries of meaning and form, allowing other passages and images to enter the act of reading. The work extends sihwa, the conjunction of poetry, calligraphy, and painting, into temporal and spatial relations among surfaces, making the viewer’s body a condition through which those relations take shape.

추상들: 아카이브 북 #001
Abstractions: Archive Book #001

Translation exchange records #001–#016, annotations, and drawings
Paper and translucent sheets, reopenable binding allowing pages to be added and reordered

21 × 29.7 cm
2025

Abstractions: Archive Book #001 is an artist’s book comprising three layers: Korean–English translation exchange records #001–#016, annotations on the process, and drawings by Jenny Jisun Kim. The artists place small translucent slips carrying questions, doubts, alternative words, and variations on a sentence over the translations. Drawings that translate each exchange into image follow on subsequent pages. This editorial arrangement allows readers to compare versions, the decisions that produced them, and their visual interpretations.

Readers lift or lower the translucent slips and move between pages to examine the relations among translations, annotations, and drawings. Superimposed on the text, the annotations directly affect its legibility and the sequence of reading. The collaborators’ decisions and hesitations acquire physical intervals through the thickness, translucency, and layering of paper. By adjusting those intervals with their hands, readers trace how a decision changes a sentence and how that change elicits a visual response. Following the course of translation becomes inseparable from handling the material structure of the book.

The reopenable binding accommodates further exchanges and changes in page order. New sentences and images can alter the book’s extent, sequence, and relations between pages. By incorporating this capacity for revision into its structure, the work involves editing and reading in the continuing process of translation. The book records an exchange at a particular moment while providing an archival form through which further exchanges can enter and reorganize it.

과정으로서의 드로잉
Transitional Drawings

Mixed media on translucent Yupo, double-sided
One side by Liyoun Kim; the other by Jenny Jisun Kim

14.8 × 14.8 cm
2025

In Transitional Drawings, Jenny Jisun Kim explores the rhythms, temporalities, and gaps in meaning she encounters in Liyoun Kim’s poetry and their translation exchanges. Through the marks and tonal qualities of watercolor, graphite, ink, and other materials, she transposes her readings into relations among line, color, density, and blank space on Yupo. Manuscript page and line references within each title identify the sentence from which an image begins, offering a means of tracing the transformations between text and drawing.

An immaterial image that arises through reading acquires a tangible trace through the movement of the hand and its encounter with materials. The artist interprets the sentence while making decisions about composition and tonal intensity. These decisions open further intervals between language and image. Liyoun Kim subsequently translates the drawings back into language, and the collaborators digitize selected images for rearrangement across translucent panels and publications. Changes in scale and support alter viewing distance and duration, as well as an image’s relations to other texts and images. “Transitional” encompasses both the formal exploration within each drawing and these passages between media.
